Antonio Cruz (Cruz & Ortiz)

Seasoned in residential architecture and well acquainted with large-scale buildings, architects Cruz and Ortiz deploy new compositional registers. Thus, as time goes by, they show an increasing complexity. Kindred to Moneo's eclectic and contextualist sensibility, Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz have developed one of the most solid trajectories on the Spanish architectural scene. Supported by the orthogonal grid that gives their buildings a serene and timeless condition, the continuous line that links the first decades of their work strays in their latest projects along paths of random geometries and renewed spatial fluidity. The office is currently in charge of the design and construction of Club Atlético de Madrid's new stadium on the site of the old Peineta. Antonio Cruz Graduated as an architect from the Higher School of Architecture of Madrid in 1971. He has been a visiting professor at the polytechnics of Zurich and Lausanne, at Harvard, Cornell and Columbia Universities and at the Pamplona School of Architecture. He has held the Kenzo Tange Chair at Harvard GSD. Since 2004, he has been an honorary professor at the University of Seville and holds the Cátedra Blanca Chair at the School of Architecture. In the last year he has been visiting professor at the Technische Universiteit in Delft, Holland, and at the School of Landscape, Engineering and Architecture (Hepia) in Geneva, Switzerland. Together with Antonio Ortiz, he began his professional activity in 1971. Some of their best-known projects and works include: Extension of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Spanish Pavilion at the Hanover Expo 2000, the Cartuja Stadium in Seville, the extension of the SBB Railway Station in Basel, the Public Library in Seville, the Community Stadium in Madrid, Huelva Bus Station, Santa Justa Railway Station in Seville and the Housing Building on Calle Doña María Coronel, also in Seville. Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz have received many awards recently, such as the appointment as Honorary Member of the Institute of Architects of America, the decoration of the Order of the Dutch Lion awarded by the King of the Netherlands, and the Gold Medal of Architecture for their professional career.
